Picture of the day: The race hit the small climb to Anghiari only five kilometers into Stage 9, and any semblance of a quiet start was tossed aside, as attacks went every which way up the steep, narrow, perfectly straight road into the town’s center. The break didn’t get away here though—it would take a bit more aggression before the day’s group of escapees, 12 strong, would wrest free of the field. After that, the field relaxed, the break pushed out a solid lead—and just barely held on to the finish in Florence. Four riders managed to hold off the hungry field, with Maxim Belkov of Katusha leaving his three companions behind in the waning moments of the stage to take the day. | Words @jeredgruber | photo @ashleygruber by bicyclingmag http://bit.ly/16tCW1O
